We love finding owls in antique and vintage jewellery. They hold such lovely symbolism, including wisdom and knowledge. This really sweet antique brooch has such a lovely owl perched upon it. The gold is two tone in green and rose and the owl has two green glinting eyes too!
The brooch is made of 9ct gold, tested. The back of the owl has the faintest marks for 9ct gold but this mark has almost completely worn away. The bar section is also marked for 9ct gold. The bar of the brooch is made of rose gold and the owl and branch are made up of a combination of rose and green gold. There is also a tiny silver moon atop the owl's head. The owl's eyes are set with two green glass stones.
The brooch we believe is likely Edwardian in age, circa early 20th Century, and has a safety pin style clasp at the back which has a clever little lever that ascts as a safety catch when closed which pushes up and down. The owl has two small airholes at the back and is hollow in the middle.
The brooch weighs approx 2.8g in total and measures approx 50mm from end to end with owl and moon measuring approx 18.1mm tall.
Condition - The brooch is in good antique condition but it does show signs of age and wear including surface wear to the gold and glass stone eyes. The rose gold has yellowed a little in places over time, mainly to the back. The pin mechanism still works well. Please see photos.
