The Hebrew word for watchtower, for centuries, particularly during the Victorian era, sweethearts have given Mizpah jewellery to their loved one when they have been separated from one another in the hope that they will remain safe and well whilst apart, until they are reunited.
This beautiful antique Mizpah ring is the perfect example of this type of love token. Made from 9ct gold with British hallmarks, the word 'MIZPAH' is spelt out in raised letters in a beautiful gothic style font. The gold has a lovely rose tone to it which is much softer than new 9ct rose gold made today. The raised detailing of the ring has been smoothed down with wear over time. We like to think this could be from someone rubbing the ring for comfort when they thought of their loved one that they were separated from - a little like a worry stone.
Inside, the ring is hallmarked for what look to be two different maker's, with the maker's marks overlapping one another. One looks to be 'S.BR' or 'S.RR' and the other looks to be 'H A'. The ring also has British hallmarks for 9ct gold, Birmingham and the date letter 'e' for 1879.
The ring weighs approx 2.45g and measures approx 7mm at its widest point at the front and tapers down to approx 3.9mm wide at the back.
Ring size - approx a US size 7 / approx a UK O (As the ring is quite wide to the front, we'd say it wears more like a US size 6.5/UK N but this does depend on your finger shape and size)
Condition - The ring is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear including surface wear to the gold. The raised detailing to the front of the ring is now worn down and rubbed in places. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the ring will be shipped in a new presentation ring box and pouch*
