This antique gold perfume bottle is such an incredible charm! With British hallmarks dating it to 1900, almost at the very end of the Victorian period, making it 125 years old!
It features a star set turquoise cabochon to the front and a wonderfully detailed lid, no detail has been spared.
The lid looks to be hinged and we believe it would have once opened but at some point in time has been permanently closed so it no longer opens. There is a very small hole to the bottom of the charm which we believe is to let the scent out when worn. Inside it looks like there is some cotton wool or small piece of fabric. We think it might have originally had perfume added to it and the lid would have opened so it could be smelt when worn and also the small hole to the bottom would have released the scent too.
The bottle has two rings, one on either side, and a gold chain has been attached with a jump ring at the top so the charm hangs in a lovely, elegant way when worn.
The charm is made of 9ct gold and has British hallmarks for what looks to be the maker 'T&W' (this mark is a little worn and hard to make out clearly), 9ct gold, Birmingham and the date letter 'a' for 1900 to one side. The bottom also has a registered mark, a faint hand scratched mark that was likely a stock mark, and a further 9ct gold hallmark which is partially obscured by the hole in the bottom of the bottle.
The charm has what looks to be a higher carat wash to give the look of 15ct/18ct gold which is yellower in colour. The hallmarked 9ct gold underneath is rosier in tone and is showing through in places where this yellower top layer has worn away.
The charm weighs approx 1.75g in total and measures approx 30mm including the chain that the bottom hangs from. The bottle itself is approx 14mm tall by approx 12.2mm wide by approx 8.8mm deep.
Condition - The charm is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear which is typical of a piece of this age. The charm is made of 9ct gold and has what looks to be a higher carat wash to give the look of 15ct/18ct gold which is yellower in colour. The hallmarked 9ct gold underneath is rosier in tone and is showing through in places where this yellower top layer has worn away. The turquoise has some light surface wear and as mentioned above the bottle lid no longer opens. The rings at the sides of the bottle have rubbed and worn the gold a little over the years. The jump ring is currently soldered closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique chain and box pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
